Seyed E. HasnainProfessor Seyed E. Hasnain (DoB: April 13, 1954), Ph.D. (JNU, Delhi), D.Sc. (h.c.) is Vice Chancellor of University of Hyderabad (UoH). He previously worked at the National Institute of Immunology, New Delhi, and was the first Director of Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD), Hyderabad. UoH has now attracted unprecedented recognition and is firmly established as the Premier University of India. Last year, it was ranked within the top 2 Universities of India in Science & Technology by the Min of S & T, Government of India and,  consequently, received the very prestigious PURSE Award from the Prime Minister of India. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) awarded UoH an overall grading of 97% (which remains the highest score given to any University). UoH is now ranked as the #1 University in the country as per the International SCOPUS data base analyses of multidisciplinary areas. In the latest ranking of top 200 Institutions in Asia, by Q&S, a prestigious China based ranking Agency, UoH is placed at # 34 in Asia in terms of academic excellence as measured by research publications (No other Indian Institution figures in top 90). In a recent report commissioned by the UK Education Ministry, 2 Centres/Schools of the UoH in Humanities and Social Sciences were recognized as Centre of Excellence while another was declared as Potential for Excellence.

A Fellow of all major Science Academies of India (FNA, FASc, FNASc), he is also a Member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (the first Indian to be elected to this prestigious body) and is one of the youngest to be elected as Fellow of TWAS, Trieste, Italy. Hasnain has made extraordinary contributions to Molecular Infection Biology and Epidemiology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the TB bacterium. He has over 200 publications in peer-reviewed journals of high impact, and over a dozen patents. He has mentored over a hundred PhD, MD and Post Doctoral students, four of whom received the INSA Young Scientist Medal.

Internationally, Hasnain is a recipient of the prestigious Humboldt Research Prize, awarded by the Alexander-von-Humboldt Foundation, Germany; as well as the very exclusive Robert Koch Fellowship, of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Berlin (an Award he shared with Professor Reinhard Kurth, Former Director, RKI and is the ONLY Indian to receive this Award) G.D. Birla Award, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, FICCI Award, J.C. Bose National Fellow Award, Ranbaxy Research Award, Goyal Award, Bhasin Award and several others. He also received the Padma Shri (Civilian Award) from His Excellency, the President of India.

Hasnain has been/is associated with several prestigious scientific journals e.g. Emerging Infectious Diseases (CDC, USA), Infection Genetics & Evolution (Elsevier), Gut Pathogens, J.BioSciences, Current Science, etc. as Senior Editor/Receiving Editor/Editorial Board Genomic Integrity (BMC), Member. Having served the Membership of the Sectional Committees and Council of the National Academies of Sciences of India, he is now a Member of the Sectional Committee (Microbiology & Immunology) to elect new members to the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. He is also a Member of the International Advisory Board, EuroPathoGenomics Network of Excellence and is the Founding Patron of the ISOGEM (International Society for Genomic and Evolutionary Microbiology, Italy).

Hasnain has now been re-invited for another 5-year term as a Member of Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (SAC-PM) and continues to be a Member of Scientific Advisory Committee to Union Cabinet. He is the Chairman of Biotech Advisory Council, Govt of Andhra Pradesh and a Member of Biotech Advisory Council of many other State Govts. A Member of Governing Council of Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, Shimla, IISc, Bangalore, IIM-Tiruchirapalli, Hasnain has been/is Chairman/Member of Advisory/Governing Council of several institutions, policy-making bodies for S&T and Higher education. He serves on the Board of Directors of Indian Immunologicals Limited, ICICI Knowledge Park, University of Hyderabad Knowledge and Innovation Park and several other Trusts and Societies.
